Car finance with missed payments on your file

A late payment marker means an account was paid after its due date. One or two, a while ago, are barely noticed by specialist lenders. A run of them in the last year, or an account still in arrears, gets more attention. What matters is the pattern and whether it has stopped.

Missed payments are the mildest adverse entry there is. Plenty of our customers have a few and never mention them; the lender sees them, weighs them and moves on.

How lenders read late payments

  • How late. Credit files record whether a payment was one, two or three-plus months late. A single month is minor; three or more edges towards a default.
  • How recent. Late markers stay on file for six years, but lenders weight the last twelve months most heavily.
  • Whether it is still happening. An account back up to date says "bad patch". An account still in arrears says "ongoing", and a lender will want to see it resolved or explained.
  • What kind of account. A late mobile bill and a late mortgage payment are not read the same way.

What helps

Bring the accounts up to date if you can, and keep them there. Six clean months does more for an application than any explanation. Check your file for markers you do not recognise: a missed payment on an account you closed years ago is common and can be disputed. And keep the car and the payment modest; affordability is what the lender is really assessing.

If money is tight right now

If payments are being missed because the budget genuinely does not stretch, a car loan will not fix that and we will say so. Free, impartial help is available from StepChange, Citizens Advice and MoneyHelper, and there is no shame in using it.

Finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. Over 18s, UK residents only. We only run a soft-search eligibility check after we have spoken to you and you have agreed to it. A soft search does not affect your credit score and is not visible to other lenders. We are a credit broker, not a lender.

Find out where I stand

How it works

Three straightforward steps

No pressure at any point, and you are free to stop whenever you like. A hard credit search only ever happens at full application, and we will tell you before it does.

  1. Tell us where you stand

A short form, about two minutes. Sending it does not run any credit check by itself and puts you under no obligation.

No credit check at this stage
  2. We call you before anything is searched

A person reads your enquiry and phones you. Only once you have agreed do we run a soft-search eligibility check with lenders on our panel who consider adverse credit. A soft search leaves no footprint and other lenders cannot see it.

    Invisible to other lenders
  3. We come back with honest options

Real figures on real cars from our Kirkham forecourt, or a straight explanation if we cannot help right now. You choose whether to go ahead.

FAQs

Car finance with missed payments: your questions

More answers on the full FAQ page.

How many missed payments is too many for car finance?

There is no fixed number. One or two isolated late markers rarely matter to specialist lenders. A run of them in the last year, or an account still in arrears, will be looked at more closely. Approval is subject to status and affordability.

Do late payments show up on a soft search?

Your full file, including late markers, is visible to you and to the lender during any search. A soft search simply leaves no footprint for other lenders to see and does not affect your score.

I missed payments on a previous car finance agreement. Does that matter more?

Yes, lenders pay particular attention to how earlier motor finance was handled. It does not rule you out, especially if the agreement was completed or settled, but expect the lender to ask about it. Subject to status.

Our promise: we will tell you if we cannot help, and why. No one can guarantee car finance, and anybody who says otherwise is selling you something.
